Growing up, Jason was drawn to the vocal strengths of Steve Perry (Journey), the showmanship of David Lee Roth (Van Halen), and the emotionality of Karen Carpenter. He acquired a taste for metal in groups like Queensryche and Dream Theater, and the musicianship and compositional sophistication of Steve Vai.
